A report lands in the inbox. On a Sunday call the student mentions a test that went badly. Homework is taking longer than it used to. For parents in Hong Kong, that is often the whole picture of a UK boarding school week. Extra lessons can help. They help more when they follow the school’s routine and the actual difficulty, rather than the worry of the moment.
A workable plan has three parts: the course the school is teaching, the hours the boarder actually has, and a way for the family to review progress without turning every call into a homework check.
What does a UK boarder’s day leave free?
Lessons are one block in the day. Prep, sport, activities, house duties and sleep take the rest. Before anyone books a tutor, confirm three things with the school and the student:
- whether video calls or extra devices are allowed, and in which room
- a slot the student can keep, with a door that stays shut
- who is allowed to speak to a teacher, and through which channel
Ask the student to name the slot. A gap that looks empty from Hong Kong may be dinner, the walk back from games, or the work due tomorrow morning. A tutor should fit the school’s rules. Contact with a teacher, access to a school platform, and help on assessed work only happen through a channel the school has already agreed.
Which qualification is the student actually sitting?
Write down the full name, not “GCSE science”. UK boarding schools use different courses, and a tutor who prepares the wrong one wastes the hour. Record:
- the qualification: AQA, OCR or Pearson Edexcel GCSE; Cambridge IGCSE; Pearson Edexcel International GCSE; or the A Level equivalent
- the subject code
- the exam series, for example June 2027
Specifications are public. Cambridge lists IGCSE subjects. Pearson publishes Edexcel International GCSEs and the UK GCSE and A Level suites. The school’s own scheme of work still decides the order.
The most recent marked piece is more useful than a request to “revise physics”. Ask what is being taught this fortnight, and what comes next. That separates a gap in earlier knowledge from a topic the class has not reached.
A low physics percentage can hide three different problems. The student may be unable to rearrange an equation, unsure which model the question wants, or mixing up units. Each one starts in a different place. The percentage alone does not say which.
What is the time difference between Hong Kong and the UK?
Hong Kong stays on UTC+8 all year. The UK does not. In winter the UK is on GMT (UTC+0), so Hong Kong is eight hours ahead. In British Summer Time (UTC+1), Hong Kong is seven hours ahead.
The UK moves the clocks on the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October. In 2026 that is 29 March and 25 October. The UK Government publishes the dates.
A booking note should show three lines: the student’s local time, the Hong Kong time, and the date. Recheck after the clocks change, after a flight, and after any change to the school timetable. A standing “Hong Kong is eight hours ahead” note is wrong for half the year.
How should one lesson be prepared?
A short routine keeps an online lesson on the real problem:
- Choose one marked task that shows the difficulty.
- Mark the step where the reasoning went uncertain.
- Note the teacher’s comment and the next topic on the scheme of work.
- If the school allows it, try one fresh question alone before the lesson.
After the lesson, leave time for the student to try a new question without help. That attempt shows whether the idea travels past the example they just watched. Share only the page that is needed, through a method the school allows, and leave other students’ work out of it.
How can The Achievers support a boarder from Hong Kong?
At The Achievers (先星教育), an Academic Consultant talks through priorities, the specification and the hours that are actually free. Subject tutors then work on explanation, practice and feedback for that board. Lessons run in Wan Chai, Prince Edward and online. Online is usually the realistic option while the student is in the UK.
The starting point follows the difficulty. A shaky idea is Conceptual Learning. A student who understands the lesson and loses marks in the writing needs Exam Techniques. A week that will not hold another fixed lesson needs Academic Coaching: fewer tasks, clearer next steps, and a check the student can keep. A reference to a school is not a partnership with that school. Current availability for the subject and board is confirmed in the consultation, not assumed from the school’s name.
Bring the qualification and subject code, one or two marked pieces, and the boarding timetable. That is enough to see whether support should follow this fortnight’s topic or repair a gap that is blocking several topics. Families comparing routes can also read IGCSE tutoring, A Level tutoring and the Achievers Methodology.
How should a Hong Kong holiday be used?
When the student is back in Hong Kong, start from the priorities already named during term. A holiday can reopen one difficult topic, steady one skill, or practise one defined exam task.
Put flights, family plans and sleep in the calendar first. Then choose what can actually be finished. A fortnight at home is not a plan to repair every gap in the course.
Before they fly back, write three lines: what was covered, what they can now attempt alone, and what still needs attention. The next term starts from that note.
Common questions
Should parents receive an update after every task?
Agree a rhythm in advance: priorities, what moved, and what is stuck. A message after every prep task crowds the student and rarely changes the plan. The student also needs room to own the work between calls.
What if there is no sustainable slot for extra lessons?
Look again at the load and the purpose, with the school if needed. A short block on one skill, or a review in the Hong Kong holiday, is often more realistic than a weekly lesson the timetable cannot hold.
Can a Hong Kong tutor contact the boarding-school teacher?
Only through a channel the school has agreed, and with the right permission. A tutor does not assume access to school platforms or to assessed tasks.
Bring the course details, recent work and the boarding timetable to academic tutoring at The Achievers, or contact us to talk through a plan for Wan Chai, Prince Edward or online.
